Different Types of Bridge Crane

Overhead bridge cranes perform the same material handling and load lifting operations as other types of giant cranes, but overhead crane systems offer the added benefits of operating at higher speeds and lifting extremely large load capacities, without adding additional floor obstructions to a facility. There are many different types of overhead bridge crane systems. They are either process cranes used for constant, specific heavy-duty lifting needs or modular cranes used in smaller mills and manufacturing facilities. Additionally, overhead travelling bridge cranes typically come in two configurations: single girder and double girder. Single Girder Overhead Crane

The single girder type overhead crane is the most common overhead crane, which is usually less expensive and simpler. It is also known as single beam bridge crane, generally used for light applications, normally up to 10 tonnes, such as 2 ton bridge crane, 3 ton bridge crane and 5 ton bridge crane.

Double Girder Overhead Crane

The double girder overhead crane structure is used for heavy-duty lifting and moving applications up to 125 tons and reaching over 100 feet of span. It is also known as goliath overhead crane.  This type crane machine can gain maximum lifting height because the hoist of the double girder overhead bridge crane is placed on the beams and the hook fits between them. Overhead bridge crane with auxiliary hook is the other common type of the crane, also referred to as double hook overhead bridge crane. The auxiliary hook hoist can be used for collaborative main hook tilting or tipping the material. Top Running Bridge Crane

This mobile overhead bridge crane type can be configured in a top running single girder bridge crane and top running double girder bridge crane design. They include a rail installed on top of each runway, and the bridge wheels move on the rail instead of the bottom flange of the runway beam. These cranes are supported by the building structure or runway support columns, or sister columns, and are ideal for moving extremely heavy loads, such as 20 ton bridge crane, 25ton bridge crane and 30 ton bridge crane.

Suspended Overhead Crane

Suspended overhead crane is also named as Under Running Bridge Crane, which is a type of light duty overhead crane that is suspended from the workshop ceiling. The rails of a suspended overhead bridge crane are secured to the ceiling of the building. The elimination of dedicated support columns provides additional floor space, but limits lifting capacity. This overhead crane system can be designed as Under running single girder bridge crane or Under running double girder bridge crane. Underhung overhead bridge cranes can be manufactured with cantilevers to access difficult points, and even can be designed to transfer materials between halls. The load capacity of this underslung overhead bridge cranes is usually relatively small, such as 1 ton overhead bridge crane, 500kg overhead bridge crane or 250kg bridge crane. They are good choices for powerhouses, public utilities, turbine rooms, motor rooms, and transformer stations.

Freestanding Bridge Crane System

Freestanding Crane System is a perfect solution for facilities that don’t have the structural support in place for fixed overhead bridge cranes. Because the runways are usually installed above the floor without footers or foundations. Freestanding overhead bridge crane system eliminate the need to attach to the workshop’s structure, for they stand in self-supporting way with their own steelwork, including pillar, column, beam, rail and so on. Freestanding modular bridge cranes can be installed in any area of a facility that has 6-inch reinforced concrete and provides outstanding lifting precision. Freestanding Workstation Bridge Crane

Work Station cranes are a type of industrial crane that consist of a moving bridge that runs across parallel runways. On the bridge, there is commonly attached a hoist or other lifting devices such as a manipulator or intelligent lifting device that travels across the bridge. Freestanding Workstation Bridge Cranes are lightweight and can be installed in any workspace. Low Headroom Overhead Bridge Crane

Low headroom overhead crane is an overhead crane designed for low headroom applications, usually in workshops or other plants with limited height. This type of overhead crane has the electric hoist placed at the side of the main girder which increase the lifting height of the hoist relatively and could lower the investment on building height. 

EOT Crane

Electric Overhead Traveling Cranes, shortened as EOT cranes, are a common type of overhead crane. They are found in many factories and warehouses. These cranes are electrically operated by a control pendant, radio/IR remote pendant, or from an operator cabin attached to the crane. The most commonly used models are 40 ton overhead bridge crane, 50 ton overhead bridge crane and 60 ton overhead bridge crane.

Process Crane

A process overhead bridge crane is built for a specific need and these types of cranes are heavy-duty (mainly Class D & E cranes) and in constant operation. They’re typically a top-running, double girder design and have a lot of engineering built-in to perform high capacity lifts at high frequency. Process cranes can be found in places like automotive assembly plants, steel mills, container yards, plastic plants, lumber mills and can perform anywhere from 10-20 lifts per hour at around 50-75% of their rated capacity.

Modular Bridge Crane

Modular overhead bridge cranes often referred to as free standing monorail bridge cranes or kit cranes. These small bridge cranes are typically found in smaller manufacturing facilities, garage, smaller-sized mills, or machine shops, and have a design consisting of a more base-level hoist, trolley, and bridge. Overhead Bridge Crane Components, Accessories and Bridge Crane Parts

The overhead bridge crane is composed of travelling system, lifting system, electrification systems and control system. Regarding the steel structure, it consists of two overhead runways built into the building’s support structure, connected by a single or double beam configuration, called a “bridge.” The bridge is supported on either end by an end truck, which rides on wheels along runways or parallel beams—allowing it to move up and down the bay. Each part of the puente grua bridge crane works together to move loads. The hoist lifts and lowers materials, while the trolley moves across the bridge, left or right. The steel plate material of bridge crane structure is general-purpose steel Q235B, and the steel plate will be pretreated by shot blasting to reach the standardization of Sa2.5 level. The bridge cranes operate on three axis’ of hook movement, which provides for the flexibility required to position and place loads very gently.

Common Overhead Bridge Crane Components:

The crane bridge – the load bearing beam which the hoist and trolley ride on. The bridge girder travels along the runway beams. The bridge travels on an overhead runway system consisting of two parallel runways. The crane bridge has wheels or trolleys that move along the top flange of each runway beam. The rigid overhead bridge crane structure provides excellent control and precise positioning when moving materials.

End Truck – also known as bridge crane end carriage or end beam, it drives the bridge down the runway.

The Trolley – The overhead bridge crane trolley is what transports heavy material along a rail at overhead heights. It is mounted on the bridge and can move along both directions of travel. A trolley has wheels or rollers that allow it to move on a bridge girder from side to side. Double girder bridge crane trolley travel assembly moves in two girders.

The Hoist Unit – Electric bridge crane hoist is mounted to the bottom of the bridge, moves vertically in the trolley, lifting and lowering loads by means of a chain or rope mechanism connected to its hook.

Structural Supports – The support structure of overhead bridge crane include columns, beams, supports, braces and brackets. Control System - A powered overhead crane needs both electrification and controls. The overhead bridge crane can be controlled via radio frequency remote control, pendant controls, or while in a cabin attached to the crane.
