A rail mounted gantry crane is a heavy, overhead crane typically used to load and unload heavy items on docks and in rail yards or factories. These cranes consist of heavy, A-frame constructions located a distance from each other and fitted with train-type wheels on their wide, lower sections. These wheels run on parallel steel railway tracks, allowing the structures to move along the rails. The two A-frames are connected at their top ends by a cross rail arrangement on which an electric winch is mounted. The complete rail mounted gantry crane can thus move forwards or backward along the lower rails, while the crane transverses the gap between them on the upper tracks allowing the gantry to cover large loading areas.

Loading docks, rail yards, and heavy manufacturing facilities often require cranes that can lift extremely heavy, large loads and move them long distances to discharge points. When the loading and offloading take place outside, in many instances, a gantry crane mount on rails is a good solution which allows for the lifting of high and heavy loads across a large loading area. These gantry crane travelling on rails are also capable of moving suspended loads over considerable distances between loading and offloading points.

The separation distance, or called span, between the tracks and their lengths are dictated by the requirements of the loading facility. Running on wheels on each of the tracks is a high, robust A-frame assembly, the top portions of which are joined together by a track assembly that supports a cross-travel overhead crane. The overhead crane with electric winch is then free to travel between the uprights along the upper tracks. In other words, the entire assembly forms an inverted square "U" with its open ends running on the lower rails.

The rail mounted gantry allows excellent flexibility regarding its range of loading movement. The crane can lift and lower loads at any point along its range of travel between the uprights. Once lifted, the entire gantry can then move along the main, lower tracks to drop the load at a discharge point. Both the crane functions and the gantry track movement are controlled from an operator station located on the crane assembly. This flexibility makes the rail mounted gantry ideal for loading and offloading cargo containers and other large loads that require both heavy-lifting capacity as well as extended headroom and travel capacity.

Rail-mounted container gantry cranes (or RMG / ARMGC) are dedicated equipment for container stacking in container yards. The working duty can reach A6~A7. This gantry crane is equipped with a special container spreader to lift 20ft, 40ft, 45ft standard containers, and hydraulic storage tanks. According to working requirements, outstretch cantilevers can be designed at one side or both sides of the main girders.

RMG Rail Mounted Container Gantry Crane Structure

Rail mounted container gantry cranes (RMG) is a specialized container handling machine that is applicable in container yard, railway container terminal, to handle international standard containers.

Rail mounted container gantry cranes (RMG) can travel on rail by means of the yard power, usually powered by cable and cable drum, to lift and stack containers in the yard area with the equipment of the 20' or 40' or 45’ freight container telescopic spreader (or twin-lift spreader if needed).

The RMG consists of U type steel gantry frame, lifting mechanism, trolley traversing mechanism, crane traveling mechanism, outriggers, container spreader (for 20’ / 40’ and 45’ intermodal container) and anti-sway mechanism, electrical control.

The gantry frame is a top horizontal frame composed of steel plates welded with 2 derailed box-type main beams and 2 upper beams; In the 4 adjustable box-type outriggers, the two outriggers on the same side of the track are connected by crossbeams at the lower end, forming two vertical plane frames, forming the rigid gantry structure type of the main beam of the crane.

A trolley running track is laid on the deflection box-type main beam upper cover plate, and the main beam upper cover plate also serves as a walking platform. Trolley can be rotating type or spreader to be rotating type, whole trolley can pass through the legs to achieve bigger working range.

An I-beam is set up along the entire plant on the inside of a main beam, and a total of car power cable sports cars are running. There is an electrical room on the outside of the main beam. Cable drums are installed on the door legs below the electrical room. The control mode usually is cabin control.

An escalator is installed on one leg below the other main beam, and a rail clamp is provided below the two lower beams.
